"To me, photography is an art of observation. It's about finding something interesting in an ordinary place.... I've found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them."
Elliott Erwitt

Gail Lithgow LBIPP
My passion for photography started at an early age – I remember my first camera – a little disc camera with fun ice cube flashes that sat on top. This fascination with photographs continued as a hobby until I travelled to various countries and continents including Africa, India, South East Asia, and Australia. It was these adventures that made me realise how important photography was to me and I realised that my future lay with a career in photography. When away from familiar territory one tends to view the world with wider eyes and even the ordinary becomes interesting. It is such an amazing feeling when you see something wonderful - a sunset, a smile, a bustling market, and you are able to capture that particular moment in time.

I was born in Devon and my love for Dartmoor and the Devonian way of life has led to my return. I lived in Manchester for 7 years, during which time I completed for my American Studies BA(Hons), which included a year living in another northern hard working (and playing) city - Chicago.

"To photograph is to hold one's breath, when all faculties converge to capture fleeting reality. It's at that precise moment that mastering an image becomes a great physical and intellectual joy."
Henri Cartier-Bresson

I have always been torn between the arts and the sciences. Photography combines art with technical skill and knowledge so suits me well. This is particularly true now as the technology involved with imaging moves forward at an unrelenting pace.

“There are no rules for good photographs,
there are only good photographs.”

Ansel Adams

Being a good photographer takes skill, time and training - through the educational system, years of experience, or preferably both. I learnt a lot through self assessment then I took with an evening class, and went on to complete an HND in photography, before being employed as a photographer

I gained a lot of experience very quickly working with other photographers as a wedding photographer and events photographer before going on to freelance work on my own. I have experience of press and PR work after working for Devon and Cornwall newspapers for two years. I have photographed everything from ants to Royalty.

I love photography – it is a powerful medium of expression and communication - entering into all the different aspects of our life, as documentation or art. Photography enjoys unique status as a diverse medium in its perception, interpretation and execution.
