If you find an image you love it can be a good idea to start with that as your basis for the theme or style of the room, and choose colour schemes to compliment the image. |
 |
In general it is a good
idea to hang the art at eye level. This will change depending
on who is most likely to view it. For example, a lower placement
of the picture may be appropriate if it will mostly be seen
by children or from a seated position. |
 |
Large pictures or groups of images make a bigger impact and can really add something special to a room. Often it is better to make a statement with dynamic art rather than paint a whole wall a bright and bold colour. Contrasting the colour of the mount to the colour of the wall also adds drama. |
 |
Informal groups of pictures
will add to the relaxed and casual atmosphere of a room, while
a symmetrical formal layout adds order. For contemporary layouts
try an uneven number of image prints, and try offsetting the
images. |
 |
Vertical lines in a picture and portrait hung frames will add height to a room, and horizontal frames and lines will broaden a wall. This effect can be exaggerated by hanging a couple of images together. |
 |
A ‘cool’ room
can benefit by an image that is predominately created from warm
colours. Lighting onto images too can warm up a room as well
as heightening the impact of the art. |
 |
For something a little different try putting up an art shelf. You can hang your art up above the shelf and add complimentary objects/ornaments to the shelf itself. |
 |
Another effective idea is
to hang a mirror opposite the art work to widen and brighten
a room. |
 |
In a small room with small or no windows, pictures with perspective, doors and windows, work well as they draw the eye beyond the solid walls. |
 |
Take advice on the best
hooks to hang the art and ensure that it isn’t exposed
to long periods in bright sunshine as photographs and pictures
will inevitably fade over long periods of time. |
 |
It is important to relate image size to the size of the space and the furniture within it. On a narrow wall several small prints will look best. Behind a large sofa it is advisable to hang the art a good 6 inches from the top of the sofa and make sure that the piece of furniture is at least 25% longer than the art image. |
 |
These ideas will give you
traditionally aesetically pleasing effects, but of course rules
were made to be broken! So experiment and have some fun. It
is a good idea to make a sketch of the space to see how the
images will look proportionately. |
